Dear Computer Therapist: It seems like it doesn't take long for my Palm device to
konk out after charging the battery. Is there a way to bolster my battery?
                                                                      -Drained
Dear Drained: Take these steps to conserve and preserve the battery's power. Any
alerts including audio or video zap the life out of the battery, so respond to them
immediately. If you're not using the music or video stop it. Or pause it. Turn off
Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Beam when they're not being used. Not only are they battery
drainers, they are also security risks.  You can set the device to sleep automatically
after a time period of inactivity. From the Home screen ► Prefs ►Power ►choose
the time that the Palm device shuts down after inactivity.

infrared technology to communicate between devices. You can set up your handheld
to beam automatically or manually. To check if the device is set to automatically
receive all incoming beams: Settings ► Connections tab ► Beam ►check the box.
To manually receive beamed items: remove the checkbox ►Receive An Infrared

Dear Computer Therapist: I can't keep up with all the security risks that can cause
my computer to act strangely. Would you please describe some of them to me?
                                                                      -Overwhelmed
Dear Overwhelmed: You're computer is at the mercy of so many wicked attempts to
corrupt its data, that it's hard not to panic.  A
virus must be activated by you. Yes you.
If you open an email attachment or click a link within an email the virus can be
unleashed. Once on your computer the virus hides itself and alters the normal
functions of your system causing hang-ups, crashes, and general bad behavior.
Worms are viruses on steroids. Worms spread throughout your computer and other
computers that belong to a network. When a
Trojan Horse infects your computer, it
allows the creator to have access to, or control over it. Unknown to you, your
computer becomes a 'bot' that spews email spam. It also can be used to infect
other computers. Lastly and perhaps the most insidious of all is the
Rootkit. It can
ruin your system. It hides itself from detection. And it is extremely difficult to remove,
often requiring a complete overhaul of the operating system. So now that I've ruined
your day, all is not lost. There are available tools  to combat the majority of these
deviants.

Dear Computer Therapist: With so many anti-virus utilities out there, I was
wondering if you can advise me as to the best one.
                                                                      - Selective
Dear Selective: The effectiveness of anti-virus programs could change from week to
week. It depends on the rate at which anti-virus companies identify new threats and
make the anti-virus definitions available for you to download and install. For an
independent testing company that rates the leading anti-virus software, go to
Virus
Bulletin.
