Dear Computer Therapist: I’ve noticed a significant slowdown when trying to get
online with Internet Explorer. What’s causing this?
                                                                      - Slow Mo
Dear Mo: It could mean that Internet Explorer’s cache somehow got corrupted—
which occasionally does happen.
Briefly, the cache (pronounced ‘cash’) is an area on the hard drive maintained by
Internet Explorer and used by Web sites to record various information. For Windows
XP computers, the following steps should restore Internet Explorer to a working
order. ** Note: do not include the quotes when typing any command in these
instructions. Click Start ► Run ►  type: ’cmd’ ►  OK ►  you will be at a command
prompt window ►  type: ‘cd local settings’ ►  press the Enter key ►  type: ‘cd
temporary internet files’ ►  press Enter ►  type: ‘content.ie5’ ►  Enter ►  press the
key combination ‘Ctrl - Alt - Delete’ by holding the ‘Ctrl’ key down while you press
and hold the ‘Alt’ key  and then press the ’Delete’ key ►  release all keys ►  the
‘Windows Task Manager’ window will open ►  select the ‘Processes’ tab ►  under
the ‘Image Name’ column right-click ‘Explorer.exe’ ►  choose ‘End Process’ ►
close the ‘Windows Task Manager’ window ►  back in the ‘Command Prompt’
window, type: ‘del index.dat’ ►  press Enter ►  type: ’Exit’  to close the ‘Command
Prompt’ window ►  press ‘Ctrl - Alt - Delete’ ► the ‘Windows Task Manager’
window will open ► select the ‘Applications’ tab ►  ‘New Task’ button ► type:
‘explorer’ ►  OK ►  reboot the computer. When the system restarts, try using
Internet Explorer to go online. This should solve the problem.
